Why We Created Alertifi We created Alertifi because traffic accidents are a severely underappreciated problem.
We all hear about each and every plane crash, but a much lower portion of car crashes reach the news or are even considered news because they are so common.
Many people including us know of good drivers that just happened to be in an accident due to: another driver, a deer or other animal jumping out in front of their vehicle, or something else out of their control.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, over 6 million crashes occurred in 2014 and in 2001 61% of all traffic fatalities occurred in rural areas.
One of the major problems with accidents in rural areas is that they’re less likely to be noticed in the critical hours following the crash.
Alertifi is meant to help address this problem.
In the event of an accident Alertifi will notify the users emergency contacts, and now optionally emergency services directly, that they’ve been in a crash with their location, if they are rendered unable to do so, so they can receive emergency response fast.
How Alertifi works Alertifi detects if you're driving while using minimal power by occasionally scanning for the Alertifi Companion Device or probing your phones accelerometer and gyroscope/magnetometer to determine the likelihood that your driving and start/stop the driving service.
While the driving service is running Alertifi monitors your phones accelerometer to sense if you get into a crash from a sudden acceleration/deceleration.
If Alertifi detects a sudden acceleration/deceleration indicative of a crash you will be alerted with a 30 second countdown to allow you to stop the emergency message if you're alright, this countdown will allow you to find a safe spot to pull off the side of the road to cancel the alert.
You can change the threshold acceleration for crash detection in the settings section of the application if you feel the crash detection is too sensitive.
If you are in an accident and the alert countdown is not cancelled Alertifi will ascertain your location from your GPS and/or cellular network and notify your emergency contacts and emergency services if text to 911 is enabled.
Advisory: Alertifi should either be used with the companion device or motion sense and start automatically, or be turned on manually before driving.
In the event the crash activity is triggered when not due to a crash pull over in a safe area to deactivate, then increase the acceleration threshold in settings to prevent false positives.
Alertifi cannot detect all types of accidents, but we are working hard to expand the types of accidents it can detect.
